Life at BAT

A stretching and supportive culture

Our world is changing. Many of our consumers seek new products that provide the pleasure of smoking and consuming nicotine, but with reduced risks.

And we aim to be at the forefront of this change as we strive towards our long-held ambition to provide our consumers with reduced-risk*† products .

As we continue on the journey of transforming our business, we want to attract the best people and offer an inspiring place to work.

As such, protecting our people’s wellbeing and listening to their views are fundamental. We want a stretching and supportive culture founded on personal commitment and responsibility that attracts, engages and retains the most talented and diverse people.

Proud to be a Top Employer

Global Top Employer 2024 We are proud of the external recognition we receive each year for our standing as a leading employer in countries worldwide.

In January 2024, we were recognised as a Global Top Employer for the seventh consecutive year by the Top Employers Institute after being named as a Top Employer across six regions – Africa, Asia Pacific, Middle East, Latin America, North America and Europe, and in 34 markets.

This global accolade reflects our commitment to nurturing and furthering the careers of our people globally.

Listening to our people

Working at BAT means being listened to and feeling valued.

Our biennial ‘Your Voice’ global employer survey is a big part of that.  In our most recent, 2021 Your Voice global employee survey, we were pleased to surpass our 2019 response rate with 93% of all employees globally choosing to respond (7% higher than our global FMCG comparator group).

Our 2021 Your Voice results outperform our FMCG comparator group in most categories, with strong results in diversity and inclusion, people management, corporate responsibility and empowerment. Our 2021 results were 1% higher than our FMCG comparator group for our Employee Engagement Index and 4% higher than our FMCG comparator group for our High Performance Index. These results reflect a connected, committed, energised and high performing organisation. We use these results as the basis for further shaping the priorities of the organisation.

Benefits of working at BAT

We recognise that attracting and retaining a diverse workforce, and providing a welcoming, inclusive working environment are key drivers in supporting and enabling our ambitious transformation journey.

  • Initiatives to promote fitness, such as health centres , discounted gym memberships, sporting clubs/events , and cycle to work schemes
  • Employee Assistance Programmes offering free, confidential emotional support and short-term counselling
  • Core benefit provision in the form of pension and l ife insurance
  • Volunteering initiatives to promote strong connections with the local community
Support for families

We pride ourselves on having a family-friendly work environment . No one at BAT should have to choose between their career and their family.

Our Parents@BAT platform provides our employees with accessible assistance, particularly when welcoming new members to the family. This initiative allows all new mothers and adoptive parents to take a minimum of 16 weeks’ fully paid maternity leave , regardless of location, going beyond many local requirements.

The platform also hosts extensive support materials, along with a 24-hr coaching service, to help ensure a successful transition into the workplace for returning parents and carers.

Our Return-to-Work guarantee means that all new mothers who are on maternity leave (or parents who are on adoption leave) for 12 months or less, will be guaranteed to return to their previous job, or to a suitable alternative wherever reasonably practicable. The first year after the child arrival, parents/carers are also able to request for flexible working .

Some of our markets also provide further childcare-related benefits, including on-site breast-feeding facilities and childcare facilities , or childcare vouchers 1 .

Flexibility

We aim to help support improved work-life integration to create a more productive and empowered workforce .

Across our business , a hybrid remote working model is considered normal practice.

Many of our locations supplement their hybrid working arrangements even further, with some affording their employees autonomy to flexibly schedule working from home time, the ability to work from anywhere for an agreed period, or part-time working solutions depending on the type of role preformed.
