Industry leadership in DJSI reflects our commitment to sustainability
We are proud to be the only company in our industry to have been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices’ prestigious World Index in 2018.
Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) track the corporate sustainability performance of the world’s largest companies.
Every year, RobecoSAM, a sustainability investment specialist, conducts the assessment, covering financially material environmental, social and governance factors, using a consistent, rules-based methodology to convert hundreds of data points into one overall score. This score determines companies’ inclusion in the DJSI.
British American Tobacco was the first ever tobacco company to be included in the DJSI and we’ve maintained our inclusion every year for the past 17 years.
In 2018, we were not only listed in the DJSI Europe Index but were the only company in our industry to feature in the prestigious DJSI World Index, which comprises the indices’ top performers globally.
Simon Cleverly, Group Head of Corporate Affairs at British American Tobacco, said: “We are incredibly proud that our world-class sustainability agenda continues to be recognised by such a prestigious external organisation – a testament to, among other things, our commitment to upholding the highest standards of corporate conduct across the world; to our tobacco harm reduction activities; and to ensuring we market our whole range of cigarette and potentially reduced-risk products in a responsible manner to our adult consumers.”
Our overall score in 2018 was 26 percentage points higher than the industry average. As well as overall industry leadership, we also achieved top scores in our industry in 11 of the DJSI’s 22 categories, including Codes of Business Conduct; Supply Chain Management; Environmental Reporting; Human Rights; Raw Material Sourcing; and Talent Attraction and Retention.
We believe these scores reflect the quality of management across our business and our comprehensive global focus on sustainability issues. Our performance shows that our employees and operations across the Group are consistently meeting the standards required of a sustainable international business.
Manjit Jus, Head of ESG Ratings, RobecoSAM said: “I congratulate British American Tobacco for being included in the DJSI World and DJSI Europe. Companies that compete for a coveted place in the DJSI challenge themselves to continuously improve their sustainability practices and we are pleased to see that the number of companies that commit to achieving measurable positive impacts continues to rise.”
In 2019, we were again awarded a Gold Class distinction for sustainability performance in RobecoSAM's 2019 Sustainability Yearbook, which is determined by scores in our DJSI assessments.
Daniel Wild, PhD, Co-CEO RobecoSAM, said: “We congratulate BAT on its Gold Award in The Sustainability Yearbook 2019, which showcases the best performing companies among industry peers and in terms of financially material ESG metrics.”
