Dow Jones Sustainability Indices

20 consecutive years in the DJSI reflects our commitment to sustainability

We are proud to be have been ranked in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices’ for 20 consecutive years.

In 2021, we were once again the only company in our industry to have been included in the prestigious World Index, which comprises the indices’ top performers globally.

Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) track the corporate sustainability performance of the world’s largest companies.

Created by S&P Dow Jones Indices, the DJSI represents the gold standard for tracking corporate sustainability. In 2021, around 10,000 companies were invited to have their sustainability practices assessed against ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria. Only the top 10% are recognised as leaders in corporate sustainability and achieve DJSI World Index inclusion.

BAT was the first ever tobacco company to be included in the DJSI, in 2002, and we’ve maintained our inclusion every year since.

In 2021, inclusion in the prestigious DJSI World Index, again followed our ranking in the DJSI Europe Index.

Kingsley Wheaton, Chief Marketing Officer, said: “It is an honour to have been recognised by the DJSI every year for the last 20 years and once again ranked within the DJSI World Index. Sustainability has been central to our business and ethos for decades, starting in 2001 when we established our first group-wide environment, health and safety systems and the BAT Biodiversity Partnership. In March 2022, we will publish our 20th ESG Report.”

20 consecutive years in the DJSI

In November 2021, BAT was named in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) for the 20th consecutive year. Once again, we were the only tobacco company to be included in the prestigious DJSI World Index, which represents the top 10% of more than 10,000 companies assessed.

Industry leadership

Our overall score in 2021 was 43 percentage points higher than the industry average. As well as overall industry leadership, we also achieved top scores in our industry in 11 of the DJSI’s 24 categories, including codes of business conduct; sustainable agricultural practices and operational eco-efficiency. We achieved 100% scores in six categories.

We believe these scores reflect the quality of management across our business and our comprehensive global focus on sustainability issues. Our performance shows that our employees and operations across the Group are consistently meeting the standards required of a sustainable international business.

Manjit Jus, Global Head of ESG Research, S&P Global, said:
"We congratulate BAT for being included in the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index. A DJSI distinction is a reflection of being a sustainability leader in your industry. The record number of companies participating in the 2021 S&P Global Corporate Sustainability Assessment is testament to the growing movement for ESG disclosure and transparency."

In 2020, we were again awarded a Gold Class distinction for sustainability performance in the S&P Global (formerly RobecoSAM) 2020 Sustainability Yearbook, which is determined by scores in our DJSI assessments.
