BAT wins 2nd runner-up for best ESG Report globally

Our leading approach to ESG reporting has once again been recognised at the prestigious Corporate Register (CR) Reporting Awards.

We were awarded as Runner Up #2 in the Best ESG Report category   for our 2019 ESG Report .  We also received a top 10 ranking  for all but one of the categories we entered. These included:

CR Report
  • 4th for ‘Innovation in Reporting’
  • 5th for ‘Relevance and Materiality’
  • 6th for ‘Openness and Honesty’
  • 9th for ‘Creativity in Communications’

These prestigious awards are unique in that they are truly global, with entries from all types of businesses around the world and the winners voted for by Corporate Register’s 65,000+ registered users from across the sustainability profession worldwide.

‘Best ESG Report’ is a new category for the 2021 awards, recognising the shift in recent years from Corporate Responsibility or Sustainability Reports to those focused on environmental, social and governance (ESG).

Feedback from the awards noted the quality of our reporting in clearly communicating our ESG performance and the credibility of our approach, underpinned by the use of several reporting best practice reporting frameworks. Indeed, we were recognised as one of the first companies in 2019 to use a new ESG index developed by the World Economic Forum. These frameworks are an important way of helping investors and other stakeholders assess companies’ disclosures and performance against in a consistent and comparable way.

Jennie Galbraith, BAT’s Group Head of ESG, said: “As part of our commitment to building A Better Tomorrow, ESG is front and centre of everything that we do as a business. We have a long history of best practice and transparent reporting on ESG issues – our next report for 2021 will mark the 20th anniversary of our first ever report.

“Over that time, we’ve understood the importance of evolving our approach to meet the needs of our stakeholders and remain at the forefront of leading practice. So, we’re delighted to be recognised in these awards, and are committed to continuing to provide information regarding our ESG efforts in clear, transparent and engaging ways.”

Paul Scott, Director of Corporate Register, said: “BAT is one of the large corporations who set the pace on transparent reporting around 20 years ago, with a comprehensive approach that included stakeholder engagement, materiality and third-party assurance.

“Since then much has changed in the reporting field, but I’m pleased to see that BAT has stayed the course and is still pushing the boundaries of transparent reporting. The votes of our stakeholders in the CR Reporting Awards are the proof of this.”
