Industry leadership in DJSI reflects our commitment to sustainability
We are proud to be the only company in our industry to have been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices’ prestigious World Index in 2019.
Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) track the corporate sustainability performance of the world’s largest companies.
Every year, RobecoSAM, a sustainability investment specialist, conducts the assessment, covering financially material environmental, social and governance factors, using a consistent, rules-based methodology to convert hundreds of data points into one overall score. This score determines companies’ inclusion in the DJSI.
British American Tobacco was the first ever tobacco company to be included in the DJSI and we’ve maintained our inclusion every year for the past 18 years.
In 2019, we were again not only listed in the DJSI Europe Index but were the only company in our industry to feature in the prestigious DJSI World Index, which comprises the indices’ top performers globally.
Simon Cleverly, Group Head of Corporate Affairs at British American Tobacco, said: “At BAT, our world-class sustainability agenda continues to be at the heart of our business strategy. Our position in the DJSI World Index is testament to our commitment to transforming our company by offering adult consumers an innovative range of potentially reduced-risk products. It also recognises our commitment to upholding the highest standards of corporate conduct in every country we operate in around the world.”
Our overall score in 2019 was 33 percentage points higher than the industry average. As well as overall industry leadership, we also achieved top scores in our industry in 11 of the DJSI’s 21 categories, including Supply Chain Management, Human Rights, and Labour Practice Indicators.
We believe these scores reflect the quality of management across our business and our comprehensive global focus on sustainability issues. Our performance shows that our employees and operations across the Group are consistently meeting the standards required of a sustainable international business.
Manjit Jus, Head of ESG Ratings, RobecoSAM said: “We congratulate British American Tobacco PLC for being included in the DJSI World and Europe. The SAM Corporate Sustainability Assessment has again raised the bar in identifying those companies best-positioned to address future sustainability challenges and opportunities.”
In 2019, we were again awarded a Gold Class distinction for sustainability performance in RobecoSAM's 2019 Sustainability Yearbook, which is determined by scores in our DJSI assessments.
Daniel Wild, PhD, Co-CEO RobecoSAM, said: “We congratulate BAT on its Gold Award in The Sustainability Yearbook 2019, which showcases the best performing companies among industry peers and in terms of financially material ESG metrics.”
