Industry leadership in DJSI reflects our commitment to sustainability
We are proud to be the only company in our industry to have been included in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices’ prestigious World Index in 2020.
Launched in 1999, the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) track the corporate sustainability performance of the world’s largest companies.
Created by S&P Dow Jones Indices, the DJSI represents the gold standard for tracking corporate sustainability. In 2020, around 3,500 companies had their sustainability practices assessed against ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) criteria. Only the top 10% are recognised as leaders in corporate sustainability and achieve DJSI World Index inclusion.
BAT was the first ever tobacco company to be included in the DJSI and we’ve maintained our inclusion every year for the past 19 years.
In 2020, we were again not only listed in the DJSI Europe Index but were the only company in our industry to feature in the prestigious DJSI World Index, which comprises the indices’ top performers globally.
Kingsley Wheaton, Chief Marketing Officer, said: “At BAT, sustainability is at the heart of our transformation, and we are proud to have been included in the DJSI for a 19th consecutive year.We believe our inclusion in the DJSI World Index is testament to our commitment to accelerate the transformation of our company.”
In November 2020, BAT was named in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI) for the 19th consecutive year and, once again, was the only tobacco company to be included in the prestigious DJSI World Index.
Our overall score in 2020 was 37 percentage points higher than the industry average. As well as overall industry leadership, we also achieved top scores in our industry in 13 of the DJSI’s 23 categories, including codes of business conduct; supply chain management and operational eco-efficiency. We achieved 100% scores in seven categories.
We believe these scores reflect the quality of management across our business and our comprehensive global focus on sustainability issues. Our performance shows that our employees and operations across the Group are consistently meeting the standards required of a sustainable international business.
Manjit Jus, Global Head of ESG Research and Data, S&P Global, said: “We congratulate BAT plc for being included in the DJSI World and Europe. A DJSI distinction is a reflection of being a sustainability leader in your industry. With a record number of companies participating in the 2020 Corporate Sustainability Assessment and more stringent rules for inclusion this year, this sets your company apart and rewards your continued commitment to people and planet.”
In 2020, we were again awarded a Gold Class distinction for sustainability performance in the S&P Global (formerly RobecoSAM) 2020 Sustainability Yearbook, which is determined by scores in our DJSI assessments.
