Sustainability Report 2011
I think we are able to have a more impartial view, bringing in different perspectives and experience and providing challenge to the business. Karen de Segundo, Chairman of the Board CSR Committee

The job of the Board CSR Committee is to make sure that the Group’s sustainability programme is on track. With the Committee being made up entirely of independent Non-Executive Directors like myself, I think we are able to have a more impartial view, bringing in different perspectives and experience and providing challenge to the business.

Sustainability often requires looking at the business from a longer term perspective. Take tobacco harm reduction: policy makers do not yet agree how to approach it and the science is complicated, but that doesn’t mean that the business isn’t committed to it. I was very encouraged by Nicandro creating the new Management Board position of Group Scientific Director this year.

In 2011, as well as looking at areas such as adherence to the Group’s International Marketing Standards and health and safety performance, we’ve also been focusing on sustainable agriculture in detail and the positive contribution that the business can make in this area. For me this is an exciting topic, as well as being particularly relevant given the increasing pressures on land and resources that the world is facing.
