Sustainability Report 2010

Over the years we have built a strong reputation for CSR and sustainability and have been seen by some as leaders in our industry. Below you will find a list of some of the awards and recognition we have received over the last 10 years.

  • Continuing inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes for nine consecutive years. 
  • Inclusion in the UK Business in the Community Corporate Responsibility Index since 2005.
  • Our first two Social Reports won awards for Best First Time Social Reporter (2001/02 Report) and Electronic Media Reporting (2002/03 Report) in the ACCA (Association of Chartered Certified Accountants) UK Awards for Sustainability Reporting.
  • In November 2004, the UN Environment Programme (UNEP) ranked British American Tobacco fourth among 50 corporate social reporters.
  • In 2007, we received a 'Big Tick' Award in the Supply Chain category of the Business in the Community Awards for Excellence, recognising our Business Enabler Survey Tool and Social Responsibility in Tobacco Production (SRTP) programme.
  • Shortlisted for our 2007 Sustainability Report in the 2008 ACCA UK Awards for Sustainability Reporting. The report of the judges commended our Report for being one of the very few that included a response to the external assurance statement. 
  • In 2009, we were the first tobacco company to achieve platinum status in the UK Business in the Community Corporate Responsibility Index.
  • Included in the Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) Sustainability Yearbook for 2009 and 2010, in both years achieving Gold Class as well as being identified as a sector Leader and, in 2009, as a sector Mover. 
  • Ranked number two in the FTSE 350 for our approach to sustainability assurance in the 2010 Carbon Smart ranking of assurance practices.
  • Named as the Best Sustainability Report in the FTSE 350 and of the UK’s largest private companies in the 2010 ranking by Radley Yeldar, a leading communications consultancy.
  • Our Biodiversity Partnership and SRTP programme were both recognised as examples of best practice in the 2010 report by ‘The Economics of Ecosystems and Biodiversity’ (TEEB) initiative.
  • Placed in the top three in the 2010 PricewaterhouseCoopers’ Building Public Trust Award for Sustainability Reporting in the FTSE 100.
