Sustainability Report 2008

Our employees come from very diverse cultures and backgrounds, and our business benefits from the breadth of new ideas and experiences they bring. We aim to create opportunities for individuality to be recognised and to encourage people to perform at their best.

Attracting, developing and retaining talent is key to our ambition to be a winning organisation. Given the nature of our industry, having a strong and clearly differentiated reputation as an employer is critical to our long-term business sustainability.

Our 2009 goals

We will work to ensure we have the right people in the right environment to deliver our vision.

  • We will start to roll out our employer proposition in priority markets during 2009 and will track awareness and perception of British American Tobacco as an employer in those markets;
  • We will aim to have succession pools at business unit level with at least one local successor ready in the short-term for each senior position and two local successors ready in the longer term. This goal is expressed as 1:1:2;
  • We will aim to have a 70/30 ratio of local to expatriate senior management team members at business unit level, not as a ‘quota’ but because we place high value on local experience and diversity in our workplace;
  • We will actively manage the career progress of our senior female managers;
  • We will work with our employees to devise action plans for improvement in response to results from our global employee opinion survey;
  • We have a long-term aspiration of zero accidents and have set a local target of zero for all Group companies. We aim to have a global Lost Workday Case Incident Rate in the region of 0.1–0.2;
  • We will develop a plan by end 2009 to reduce vehicle-related injuries in our Trade Marketing and Distribution function;
  • We will publish a paper summarizing our approach to human rights and how we manage human rights in our workplace and supply chain; and
  • We will develop provisions incorporating human rights considerations for inclusion in our Standard Terms and Conditions for contracts with suppliers.
