The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes track the economic, environmental and social performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. One covers the world, the other Europe, and they are based on the co-operation between Dow Jones Indexes and the Sustainable Asset Management (SAM) Group.

Guido Giese, Head of Indexes, SAM: “The participation rate for this year’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment was 8.4% higher than last year. We see this as a strong signal of the increasing recognition that integrating sustainability into corporate strategies is essential to the bottom line. The companies that participate in our assessment really grasp the financial materiality of incorporating sustainability into their strategies.”

A detailed assessment of companies' performance covers both general and industry specific criteria, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, water use and waste generation, and the integration of sustainability strategies into core businesses.

Our overall score was 88 per cent, on par with last year’s performance, consolidating our position as industry leader.

We scored a maximum 100 per cent rating in six key categories - Risk and Crisis Management, Combatting Smuggling, Environmental Policy / Management System, Fuels for Tobacco Curing, Human Capital Development and Responsible Marketing Policies. This is two more categories than 2011 - the additions being Environmental Policy / Management System and Human Capital Development. We achieved a best score of 93 per cent in the new Supply Chain Management category.

As in 2011, we exceeded our business measure target by scoring better than the sector average in all 20 categories and achieved the best scores for the industry in 13 of the 20 categories.

“British American Tobacco was the first tobacco company included in the DJSI indexes eleven years ago and we have been included each year since,” says Jennie Galbraith, International Sustainability Manager. “This shows that our employees across the Group have consistently met the standards required of a sustainable international business.”
