British American Tobacco has been included in both the Dow Jones Sustainability World Index (DJSI World) and the Dow Jones STOXX Sustainability Index (DJSI STOXX) for the eighth year running.

Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes

The Dow Jones Sustainability Indexes track the economic, environmental and social performance of leading sustainability-driven companies worldwide. One covers the world, the other Europe, and they are based on the co-operation between Dow Jones Indexes, STOXX Limited and the Sustainable Asset Management Group.

A detailed assessment of companies' performance covers both general and industry specific criteria, including the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy consumption, water use and waste generation, and the integration of sustainability strategies into core businesses.

We scored a maximum 100% rating in three key areas, Environmental Reporting, Fuels for Tobacco Curing and Responsible Marketing. We also achieved the best scores for the industry in ten out of the eighteen categories. These included strategic areas of concern such as Risk and Crisis Management, Customer Relationship Management, Environmental Policy, Human Capital Development, Labour Practice and Responsible Marketing Policies.

“British American Tobacco was the first tobacco company included in the DJSI indexes eight years ago and we have been included each year since,” says Jennie Gibbons, International Sustainability Manager. “This shows that our employees across the Group have consistently met the standards required of a sustainable international business.”
