Smoking spaces can often be easily created

We support the development of comfortable outdoor accommodation for smokers in places where bans have forced them outside.

Typically this means suitably covered areas with seating and heating or cooling.  Some bars in Ireland, for example, where smoking inside is banned, even have outdoor weather-proof televisions and music systems. At British American Tobacco’s sites in the UK we have created smoking areas for our staff that are comfortable and pleasant.

We also support ways to improve consumer education about butt littering and the provision of public bins.

Examples include Australia, where our company pioneered and funds the Butt Free Australia Opens in new window, which manages and allocates funds to tackle the problem.

In Switzerland, we have distributed free portable ashtrays at music festivals, on lakeside beaches and the ski slopes to help raise awareness of the problem.

In the UK, along with other tobacco companies and the Tobacco Manufacturers’ Association (TMA), we support the Smokers Welcome initiative as part of our commitment to listening to, informing and supporting the licensed and hospitality trades following the implementation of the smoking ban.

Smokers Welcome Opens in new window provides consumers with information on venues across the UK with outdoor areas where adults can smoke, drink, eat and socialise.  A search facility enables site visitors to input their post code or a location and search for venues in their area who have made outdoor provisions for smokers.
