Anthony Ruys, who retired as Chairman of the Executive Board of Heineken in October 2005, was appointed to the Board of British American Tobacco p.l.c. as a Non-Executive Director in March 2006. He is a member of the Audit and Nominations Committees.
Anthony joined Heineken in 1993 as a member of its Executive Board, became Vice-Chairman in 1996 and Chairman in 2002. Previously he worked at Unilever for nearly 20 years in the Netherlands, Colombia and Italy, holding various marketing and general management positions.
He is currently Chairman of the Supervisory Board of N.V. Luchthaven Schiphol and a member of the Supervisory Board of JANIVO Holdings BV in The Netherlands.
He was appointed a Non-Executive Director of the Group's Indian associated undertaking, ITC Limited , in January 2009.
Commenting on his appointment, Anthony said: “I am particularly interested in Corporate Social Responsibility at British American Tobacco; I am looking forward to gaining a strategic overview of the issues and transferring this into something which can be implemented in a pragmatic manner.”
Anthony, who is married with two children, was educated at the University of Utrecht and Harvard Business School. He lives in The Netherlands.
