We have worked on the challenge for decades, in consultation with governments, and we continue working on it today. The science is very difficult and is still inconclusive about what might be considered a potentially 'safer' cigarette. It has sometimes been suggested that we knew how to make a 'safer' cigarette years ago, but we did not. This is a myth. If we had been able to make a 'safer' cigarette, particularly one supported by public health authorities, we would have brought it to market because it would obviously have benefited both smokers and our business.
